tip 14 ..... spraying hammerite paint or similar

FIRST Read the instructions for use of Hammerite on the tin!!

If you look at the picture this is what can happen to the paint if you leave it too long before you apply a second coat.

This can also happen if you spray on a varnish (to set the lettering) that is incompatible with the Hammerite. Try a test on a scrap of material first and leave plenty of time (couple of hours) to ensure there are no problems once the hammerite has been over-sprayed with the varnish.

With Hammerite it is suggested that you start spraying away from the left of the work (or the right if it suits you) and then pass over the work, spraying as you go, in a straight line. Don't stop spraying until you are past the work. Go back to the start and do the same again having moved down the work a small amount. Repeat this method until the work is painted. DO NOT spray whilst moving "too and fro"....only when moving in the one direction. Try and spray the work completely at the first attempt (practice) and DON'T go back over it. If a second coat is needed (spray the entire surface...not parts of it) then apply the second coat, after say, twenty minutes.....don't leave it a few hours or you run the risk of having the paint wrinkle.
